Artist Statement

After viewing my art, people often want to know what inspires my creativity. Sometimes I hear or read something that forces me to put my thoughts and feelings onto the canvas. Other times, I just start with a blank canvas and allow the feelings at that moment to decide what I create. I never want to paint for the sake of painting; instead, I want my emotions and creativity to influence and reflect in my artwork.

Of all the styles I paint in, my favorite is abstraction. It provides the ability to express myself in unlimited ways, while creating an interaction with the viewer's own emotions, fantasies and thoughts. I truly believe that art should be complex to comprehend, inviting the viewer to take a more in-depth look so that the painting remains on their mind, evoking further questions and analysis. When I am able to transfer a thought to an abstract form, the interpretation of that work becomes infinite. Additional twists to my interpretation cause the artwork itself to become endless. My work becomes even more personal when the viewer finds a new aspect each time they look at it. I incorporate my creativity in all my work – from figurative, to landscapes, to total abstraction – while remaining distinct and unique. Every day I paint, I discover new ways of manipulating my work, becoming just as exited as the day I discovered this art form.

My artwork tends to be political, educational, thought provoking and controversial without being confrontational. I take joy in watching the reactions from people when we discuss the artwork they are viewing; frequently the explanation evokes a strong emotional response. There is a powerful message behind every work if someone chooses to take the time to understand it.
